Traditional Slots

Traditional slot machines are still a preference for many people especially those who aged with casinos. Playing online may still offer almost the same prizes as land-based traditional slots, but the feeling that you play a real machine is really something different.

The one-armed bandit invented by Charles Fey in 1887 (some say 1895) was the very first version of a traditional slot machine. He designed a gaming machine then that was similar to today’s 3 reel slots. Fey named his invention as Liberty Bell after the American Revolutionary War symbol which is also one of the five symbols he used for the machine.

Fey’s Liberty Bell machine quickly became popular. Several bars went to copy the machine and in 1907, Operator Bell machine was produced by manufacturer Herbert Mills of Chicago. An earlier precursor of slot machines can also be cited when in 1891, Sittman and Pitt of New York developed a machine that used face cards as symbols on reels and a lever to spin the reels.

In 1963, a Chicago-based company called Bally introduced slot machines that fully operated on electronic microprocessors. The company called their machines as Money Honey. The lever that was used to spin the reels was phased out. The development also allowed automatic prize payouts.

Sometime in the 1970s, Walt Freely ushered another improvement in the slot machines gaming industry. He developed the very first video slot machine. Slots fanatics were first skeptical of the new slots as the absence of the tangible reels was somewhat awkward. People also questioned the reliability of the outcome as others call it unfair. However, the fact that video slots are quicker and easier than their predecessors, they eventually gained popularity and through time, people were assured that the machines produce honest results due to the probability equations involved.

Online slot machines may bring more convenience to gamblers, but land-based slots really bring the essence of reality and real-life socializing. However, the choice is always up to the player.
